It involves two sisters and a magical creature hidden in the wood. It kind of has all the ingredients for a specific genre. And I wanted to ask you, is The Wish a fairy tale? That's a really good question. I think it is not like a very traditional fairy tale, but the whole story is kind of worked on a fairy tale-like story based on like old tales from Austrian... old tales and it's inspired from those old tales also with the creature from the little forest man the wild man line which is also inspired from there and so with this space I kind of created a new storyline with maybe a little bit more modern way of going but in the end it has a very fairy tale structure. Maybe I want to ask you something about the characters that you draw in your film. I think mostly the protagonist is a really really cool person, strong but also funny and I wanted to ask you how did you come up with the figures and how did you come up with the characters and how do you draw them? The main character I came up with her already like five or six years ago when I was thinking in a completely different direction I was thinking more about superheroes and giving someone a superpower which is disgusting at first like my idea was to give her the power of slugs so she would turn into something really slimy and she was this character that was like she didn't like a lot of things and she always seemed a bit more grumpy but then she had this power and it really she made her struggle a lot with her situation but then it went into a different direction more into this direction with magics and witches so I kind of turned her a little bit around but it just happened from drawing her more often and then coming up with other characters like her sister and then how they go together and then there's always a really big background story which in the end doesn't matter that much in the movie scenes like you can't really show it but yeah it's like this thing happened where you're just motivated to draw your characters in different situations and also she had a lot of different stories where i put her in until i finally got to this one and maybe my last question would be a more personal one do you want to maybe share with us what is it that you like most about animation filmmaking? I think what I like most about it is the truth behind it like for me animation film in general has a very it seems very true to me like there are no real actors involved or really bad special effects or things like that like the characters exist as themselves they don't go home after they played the role and then they have the other life they're just living this life that's created around them and i think i really like this part about animation which always made me like when i was a kid i always only liked animation films and I never liked all these other movies and I think that was maybe a reason why I liked it so much. In your film Drowning Deep the protagonist experiences a series of misunderstandings that make her feel very uncomfortable. Can you maybe tell us a bit what was your idea behind this story? Well, it's sort of from my personal experience when I was a high school student. I used to was a school student. I used to transfer from one school to another school and I found out that when you are in a complete new surrounding you become very sensitive about what people think about you and what they say and what to do, would I be comfortable with them? And in these circumstances, when you are very sensitive, you might be misunderstanding or think too much of other people's behavior. And this experience is where this story starts and what what i want to try and tell in this story and i think these feelings that you talk about they're not only shown in the story but also very much lets us feel them visually on a visual level and can you maybe tell us a bit how did she decide to show her emotions of your protagonist and this troubled feeling on an artistical technical level? Well, well, one is that I decided to choose lens which is usually 50 or 85 lens as those lens then can portray the character and make the surrounding kind of blur to focus the audience attention or on the character face and about her feeling and in the way what we portray in this field it's kind of we see from the character's point of view and when he's in a kind of emotional situation and what he sees maybe is blind or twisted like in the in the scene that he is locked maybe inside the classroom those classmates are just simply having fun but in her point of view they are kind of being crazy and being very vicious Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and also your knowledge about filmmaking with us and thank you so much uh for sharing your thoughts and uh also your knowledge about filmmaking with us and thank you for taking the time for the q a thank you yeah hello and welcome to the short q aathers which is in our film program this year and yeah my first question would be about the about the character how the process of creating the character was because it's a stop-motion film and yeah I know I don't I've never done a stop-motion film myself but I can imagine it's a lot of work oh yeah um yeah so the idea the whole concept of the film took me a while to come up with and it was sort of a long drawn-out process um but I don't know um the design for him sort of just popped into my head and then I started sketching him and as I was creating him he modified a little bit for what was easier and also just what looked good and eventually yeah I ended up with the little guy who I still have somewhere in my room here cool yeah yeah I really like him and I also like the bird a lot. No, I actually created it all myself in Garage Band. Oh, cool. Yeah. I've been wanting to make music for my films for a while now but that was the first one where like I really did the whole thing by myself and had lots of fun doing it wow yeah fun that's amazing really cool and it's also a really cool effect I think when the music suddenly stops when the breath dies it's really it's really like this wow now changing thank you perfect um yeah and uh what I also noticed about the movie that it's somehow a covid lockdown atmosphere did you make the movie during a lockdown or quarantine yeah well I made it starting last year and um here yeah things were still pretty covid everyone was stuck in their homes so yeah it was really about I guess in a way the guy in the film gets out of his covid boredom and through making the film for me that got me out of COVID boredom so it's kind of like a double release yeah that's cool yeah yeah I think it worked quite fine because it's not it's not a frustrating COVID film because it was the good ending yeah cool that was already it uh thanks for the for the short talk it was really nice meeting you of course nice to meet you too thank you so much bye bye hi and welcome everyone i'm leonie and here with me is elsa van damke and today we talk about the film pizza d'amour d'amour. What was the reason to make a film about the topic sex or sexuality? Well, I think in general, it's a very important topic to talk about. And also I think it's a very important topic to talk about between parents and children. Oh, yeah. I come from a family where we are really on a friendship level. And my mom is one of my best friends and yeah I just witnessed or I just felt that I was always feeling uncomfortable when talking with her about this topic why can I talk with her about breakups about like apartment stuff about Texas about anything but sex isn't your mom like the best person to talk about this because you can trust her and she has a lot or she experienced hopefully a lot and why why can't we talk with our parents and why don't we want to know about their sexuality and our parents I think it works both ways they don't really want to know about our sexuality as well yeah and there were a lot of question marks so we thought we would dive into it and make a movie about it it's really cool i also think it's a very important topic to talk about because in my family it's the opposite so i also don't speak with my parents about those topics and yes and which scene was the most challenging in your film? the most difficult one was when Zuri punches Thomas in the face and we had a stunt coordinator on set and he came and he saw the shot list and he was like wait so you're shooting a stunt scene but you're only doing it in like one shot i was like yeah like yeah you should have called me beforehand because normally you say for a punch scene you need two angles at least so you can like cut and fake a lot because of course like they're not really punching each other in the face it it's all fake. and then he was like but is it from the side? and i was like no. it's full frontal and it's just one shot. so thomas is sitting with his face to the camera and zuri has to hit him here. i think they both, both the actors, were very excited to do it and they were practicing while people were building the lights and preparing the set. they were on the side and they were like practicing and practicing but when we're shooting like time is running and time is money i think. it took us 15 takes to do it and in the end she touched his nose. she didn't punch his nose, but she touched the nose. This should not happen. Nobody was hurt, but they weren't touching. And normally you do stunts and you practice stunts without any touching. But was that the final shot with the touching? Yes, it was the 15th take. And that is the one that is in the film. Yeah, really cool cool thank you for this talk about your film i hope i see you at the uk festival i have to check my date but we have like a schedule with all the festivals and i try to be there oh really cool i hope i see you thank you thank you so much bye bye hello and welcome to the q a of two of the filmmakers of bad romance on the one hand lotta schwerk the director and on the other hand fionn muttert the camera person i would jump in first question how did the idea of this project arise um so this was actually something that was kind of like a competition um where so these are this is an independent opera crew which we are not a part of um and are the singers and the musicians you see in the video and they covered five different songs from main pop artists and wanted to make music videos for them and it was kind of like a corona production that they wanted to do something off stage and online so I pitched for the song Bad Romance because they chose the songs already and I said I want to do like a I want to do a west side story kind of love story on a skate park because skate parks are cool and that is yeah and then I asked fion if you wanted to be a part of it the both of you are working together quite a lot and have worked in the past together quite a lot um how how do you approach this working together how do you decide on what images you want to shoot or how to shoot them which visual language to use how is your workflow considering that um i think in this case in this music video it was the like motif tour like when we went to different skate parks the images kind of elaborated and lototte had a pretty clear like script in the beginning and then together we worked on images and also the script changed a little bit and I think it's like always us moving forward backwards and communicating a lot looking at photos a lot how did you came up with the idea of skate parks i mean it's very basic but um in the beginning of the second lockdown so like 2021 in the spring i had nothing to do at all so i started skating and i was at the skate park a lot and I thought this is a very cool hobby and this is also visually I was very like oh my god everything looks so great there's so many things you can do with it and I also thought it was very funny the kind of scooters scooter boys scooter kids that always fight against the skateboarders and I mean mean, Fionn, you have also a history with skating. Hello and welcome to this short Q&A I'm here with uh Mostafa Gebe hello hello you made the film Aurewa that is running at this year's Yuki so um my first question would be how did you come up with the idea of making a film about this topic? Like what is happening after the hours of like in the hours after somebody died? Yeah it was it was always an interesting idea for me, that what will happen after we die. I know it's a very dark idea, but what will happen? So I sort of, when we died, we have a quote in Egypt that in the place when someone died, we say, I feel his soul here. So from here we began. when someone died, we say, I feel his soul here. So from here we began, and my idea was, when we die, we should, before we go to whatever we're going to, we try the things we love for the last time before we finish, or we vanish, whatever you're gonna say. Wow, yeah, that's really interesting. Yeah, cool. And I also really like the pictures in your film, like the colors and the framing and everything. So I was wondering, is this your first film or are you already an experienced filmmaker? It actually might. It's my officially first film, but I have tried many before, you know, the filmmaker industry and stuff. But this one is my first professional one and I tried to make it like a good cinema, but we have limited equipment, limited resources. So we are very happy to get the results we got. And that was unbelievable. Yeah, I think it worked out like really, really fun. It was like, it was Anderson Anderson if you know it. Yeah. Oh yeah. Yeah that's true. If you say it now like the colors and yeah yeah nice. And do you already have a new film project in mind or what are you currently working on? Yes, actually we are preparing my second film. It's called A City Without Love. We are preparing for it and we are searching for production and we are on our way. It's about two teenagers uh two teenagers just trying to have the first kiss and their and in the valentine days and if you know anything about egypt the cases and any romantic connection it's forbidden so it's like taboo and you restarting oh wow yeah it sounds interesting then maybe we will uh we will get your film for the next years or the year after yuki yes we would be looking forward yes sure okay yeah thanks for the for the talk. Welcome to the Q&A for the film Things That Won't Die things that won't die um with uh from manuela gutierrez arieta who is uh the director producer writer um main cast i mean basically everything um from this film and um yeah thank you for doing the Q&A with me. Thank you for inviting me. I'm so thankful for being here. So can you talk about your process of making the film? Because for me, it's not very clear. Did you just kind of started doing the research in your own i mean your research in your own database first or did you start writing about the topics that you wanted to talk about first or yeah what was the chronology of these things yeah yeah it's a work for class. So in class, we start talking about the way that I relate to the internet. And I saw these videos that I uploaded on internet when I was a kid and I can't relate. And we thought that it will be interesting if I search all the things that I searched on the internet when I was a kid. I started making the research and I found a lot of things that I didn't remember, like the sexual conversation, but also other things that I didn't include in the film. And I made a diagram, because I don't like to write scripts, with all the ideas that I want to transmit. I tried to link the ideas with all the ideas that I want to transmit and try to link the ideas with the material that I had. So I made a simple structure and it was so useful to know when I was recording the screen of my laptop, when I'm going to use that material and for what and what I want to express with that. But yes, all the process was one week. So from the moment that we start talking about the film and when it was finished, only happens one week. And I saw the material constantly to my professor. So it was a good dialogue with that. dialogue with that but that's crazy that you made that film in only one week uh so how how many takes did it take is this one take the film that we are watching or how yeah how many a lot of cuts in the film uh but i record the film so um i don't know like I record a scene then I put it on the program and I record the next one so it was really like constant the process but yeah I think that that's why the film is so honest because it's my first reaction to the material and I didn't have time to think would like everything or to make a reflection.
