And yeah, my first question is, I really like the visual appearance of your film. And it's very interesting. Is it a combination between self-built things and background and visual like computer animation right? Yeah the sets are built from recycled cardboard and recycled magazines collaged together and the actual animation of the characters are done with like 2D digital animation and composited textures on top wow and was it like complicated to mix these two things or i like already a pro with these things oh no it was very much a talent error um it was very tricky to figure out how to blend it so it didn't look like they're like the character was floating around because um like a lot of the shots was taken with a motion control rig camera so it was like a moving scene essentially but the characters had to be keyframed so that they don't look like um so they have contact points so they don't look like they're like floating around yeah wow okay and and how did you come up with the story that you that you wanted to tell because I think it's really it's really cute because it's so subtle in a way yeah uh the original story came from during the summertime um it was really hot last summer um and I remember just just like trying to stay like in the basement as much as possible to avoid the heat and I just thought like the fact that the basement and the laundry room like somewhere like kind of dingy and gross would be a really interesting place to start a story um and from that idea I was a part of a class in school that's experimental animation where we kind of pitched an idea that we would like to try and our teacher helped us try to figure out um how to pursue that and I mentioned that I wanted to use like I wanted to build like a setting because I wasn't very good at building like 3d stop motion puppets but I thought maybe if I can build a set I can reverse that instead of building a puppet I will set and animate the characters instead um and so the animation technician and as well as my teacher was lovely in helping like figure out how I can approach that wow nice yeah cool and what I also really like about the film is the sounds and the and the music and I also feel like it's really important for the film like all these little sounds that the creature makes and so on did you make the sounds all by yourself or how was this process? I had a composer. I reached out, I think, when I was pitching the idea in class, I was also pitching it to a couple composers and asking them, what do you think about this? Is there something, does this work with whatever you would like to compose? Are you interested in potentially being part of this project? And you interested in potentially, you know, being part of this project? And I had a lovely composer, Ben, who was able to just like completely grasp the idea immediately, it was amazing. And he composed like the music and the soundtrack for the film. And then I was also taking a class for sound design for animation and film. And I talked to the teacher there to help figure out how to make like sound effects like the bugs scrolling around or like walking like trying to figure out how to edit sounds from that class wow cool yeah it turned out quite well I think yeah our time is already over so so thanks for this short talk. You're 22 and this is the second film you have directed. Correct. And my first question to you is how did you come up with your idea for your film One Call Away? So it started like back in 2020 when we were in pandemic. We were all kind of separated and so for me it was kind of like ironic. I mean, not to make fun or anything, but, you know, everybody was going crazy about, you know, being separated from each other, being like 10, 15 miles away from each other. And they were like, oh my God, doing Zooms and FaceTime and all of that and being like, oh my God, I miss you and stuff. And for me, didn't feel that much because, because I mean I've been separated from my family and friends for six years now um as an immigrant so it was like I was talking to my parents and it felt like a regular face call like every day and so for me it was kind of ironic that you know that feeling um so I wanted to kind of talk about that, but I wanted people to feel connected because of COVID and stuff, but at the end having this little plot twist that it was not for because of COVID, it was for dedicated to immigrants and Venezuelans. You dedicated this film to your family and everyone who like you had to leave their home country. How far in how far is one colorway and also biographical so i said that it it is and it it is not um obviously it's not like then i'm saying this is my story but at the same time it is as an immigrant you know like all people and it's because venezuelan right because that's where i'm from um all the people that have shown this film that are venezuelan feel connected with the film so i feel like it it is because it's where I'm from. All the people that have shown this film better than I have, I feel connected with the film. So I feel like it is because it's our story and it has little hints and stuff that it's my story, my life, but it doesn't mean that it's exactly this is what happened to me. You know what I'm saying? And when starting the process of making a film, where do you normally draw your inspiration from? I try to draw my inspiration from like my experience. I used to write things that were not like things that I used to live or like I have experienced. So it didn't came out naturally. So I try to draw my experience of like how I'm feeling, how I like my experience and kind of make it natural and realistic for the audience. Thank you very much for your time. I'm Martina and here with me is Irfanul, the director of the documentary The Land of My Forefathers. It's a documentary that searches for cultural heritage in balochistan in pakistan and it's a documentary that involves a lot of research i imagine how did you come up with this topic and interest uh actually i have a very you know archaeology and history is a very close person my art so. So I was always drawn to it. Before becoming a filmmaker and a designer, I always wanted to be an archaeologist, just as I say in my movie if someone was watching it. So I never knew that my own ancestral land has a great importance in the world of archaeology. When I found that out, I went out there to find out why I didn't know about it in the first place for a guy who is into archaeology industry he doesn't know how come the common people would know that so that was the whole journey and it was my thesis project as well for my bachelor's degree so yeah uh it was an interesting journey and an heartbreaking one for me because we have lost so many things during the regime of the events but at least I got some of it in a documentary shape and I will work on it in the future as well, hopefully. And I think in your film you really managed to state clearly that cultural heritage is something to be protected and cared and I wondered what do you think is the potential of filmmaking regarding this question of cultural heritage? Filmmaking in term of serving the culture and protecting it can do wonders just like my documentary uh but it's not just my documentary people have done it earlier it's a way to capture the moment right there and then whatever that is and in the shape of a video or a photograph so that no and if it is available in internet or in the web so it will be there forever maybe you know so one way or another you are in a way preserving a part of history which you cannot do individually without help of government and organization as a person you cannot do it alone but as a filmmaker I managed to at least identify the sites and talk to some people, at least confirm that there has been something like this, you know. We have these historical sites which are being destroyed or lost. Now someone would know and it is hopefully preserved in the shape of a video. I imagine the filming must be a real journey or also adventure in looking for these sites and i think you filmed mostly with your phones right yeah uh i didn't have the budget to uh i wanted to do it on a nice camera maybe a sony or something like that but i didn't have a crew i didn't have the budget to rent a camera i just borrowed an iphone from a friend and went out there and you know try to capture the journey i've been trying to uh push the you know uh limitation of a phone that can we do it can we tell a good story with a phone or not for me i story the story matters the most uh the medium comes later with the budget and the limitation i think if you have a good story you can say it uh with any medium you want with the indie cam or a mobile phone or whatever it is just go out there and shoot it you know just just say what you want to say i think it's really cool that with this film you bring a lot of visibility to these sites and also to the topic and maybe some more inspiration to engage with it and research it. My name is Lisa and I'm part of the UKI team and I'm very happy that I have a conversation with the filmmaker Ibrahim Mohamed today who is presenting his film Only Child at UKI. Thank you very much for being here today and talk to me. I will dive in with the first question right away and talk to me. I will dive in with the first question right away and I will ask you about maybe the way you describe your filmmaking yourself because you state that you touch on issues with a lot of people from the black community phase and you process them with your filmmaking or with your film and I would like you to describe those issues maybe or like give us an insight into what issues you mean by referring to that um yeah so I I kind of like to think that my film is sort of a way of healing trauma that goes on within the black community because I feel like there's a lot of trauma when it comes to family issues or being able to reach out to people in times of grief um and so this was sort of a way of showing that it is possible taking the right steps forward for some people with the main character reuniting with her father, who she very much doesn't want to talk to. Because I think, you know, it's quite stereotypical, but it is a problem where you'll have parents leaving the household or having broken families. And I wanted to sort of touch on that issue. And why do you feel is it important to you or why did you decide to use, to use film as a tool to approach those topics or to deal with those issues? I mean, I think film is one of the most powerful mediums. I'd say probably music would come second to that, but I think film is just, it's so visual. It's almost like if you're making a story that reflects someone, it's almost as if you're literally showing a reflection of them and what they may see in their day-to-day. I don't think there's anything else that can sort of capture that same emotion other than like seeing something on the screen right in front of you. I agree with that. Leading actually to my next question, because you studied film and media production but also design and I would like to ask you what are you currently working on? Are you currently working on new films or projects that have to do with film or are you currently interested in a different field of media or probably design? For now I think probably film I'm always thinking of new ideas new ideas for stories new scripts or I'm always working on other people's things so it's just sort of staying within that realm I think I've recently become quite interested in television as well though and sort of like maybe mini series and things like that um with the design aspect I've kind of been looking at um like fashion and how that sort of influences society and things like that um so just different sort of things that I've been thinking about starting that I just need to actually start um yeah thank you thank you very much I think this was a really um nice and also quite precise insight into your work and i thank you for taking time and i recommend to all of the people that have not watched your film yet to watch only child at uk thank you very much thank you hello welcome to the q a with uh lise um from at on the Grip tape. So your film is really it's like very intense I think the story is really it's like very tragic in a sense especially the ending and it's also based on a true story if I'm not mistaken. And it's also based on a true story, if I'm not mistaken. So it's not one story. It's like what is happening daily in Rio, like the violence of the favela. But it's like inspiring from the news. Okay, so it's part like it's taken from different accounts, but it's basically still fiction. Yeah, I write it. I still fiction. Yeah. Yeah. I write it. I write it. Yeah. Okay. Okay. I wrote it. Can you tell me a little bit about the research process? How did it all come together? Yeah. So I really wanted to make a movie in Brazil because I really like the environment, the people, the culture. And then I watch a YouTube video of Adem Mafia. It's like a skate crew in Brazil. And I was like, yeah, I want to do a movie about skateboarding for my graduation short film. And then I start to write and research about it and then I started to do the direct artistic direction so I started with gouache and then I discovered this amazing oil pasteur from Caran d'Ache from Caran d'Ache and then I was like okay that's perfect the colors are very vibrant very colorful let's say then I started to contact some people to make the voice because it needed to be in Portuguese of course and these people also helped me to add some details because they were from Rio. And we recorded this with my sound designer, Jérémy Espéré. And we all worked together. And I'm very thankful for all the people which were involved on this project. And what other projects are you working on currently? Or can we be excited for projects in the future i hope like this project took me a year and a half to make from the beginning to the end so it's a lot of work a tv show which is going to be on a channel in france and right now i'm researching some other ideas and I hope I can make another movie one day maybe not by myself because it's a lot of work I think it's cool to be in group too so yeah I want to do other movies and I like the idea of skateboard in Brazil so maybe maybe something yeah something in that world again yeah that would be really exactly really cool yeah okay yeah thank you so much for the for these amazing answers and hopefully we will see you around with your next films at the Yuki or hopefully also live I hope so yeah thank you guys to select my movie for selecting my movie that's very nice of you yeah thank you and i hope i can attend all right great thank you thank you very much hi laura it's very nice to see you hi barbara so the music is very energetic as well as the movement of the dancer. How did the idea to combine the two things arise? It was just like a really spontaneous idea at a slightly drunk night out. And we were just like a group of friends who was partying. just like group of friends who was partying and we saw Adriana the the performing the dancer um dance to a song of bipolar feminine um and then like Max and I the the one who who's also in the band um just born the idea that it would be nice to see her perform a song of bipolar feminine what did you want to convey with this video or was there something special you wanted to convey um i mean i think it's it's kind of the idea that like you sometimes you like everybody sometimes feels like a Zora and you're just like angry and you have to channel your emotions and concerns somehow and that it doesn't always have to be like violence to like channel these emotions but it can also like be like a girl on an empty stage and the band playing for her and her just like dancing out her emotions in like a small town and it's just her on the stage yeah I think maybe that was like the idea and have you created a picture of the Zora who was sung about and if you have what do you imagine her to be like I mean in the beginning I think yes but the the picture of Zora kind of got lost because like the idea as I said um that everybody kind of is Zora or has like parts of Z aura inside itself so I think it's not like a concrete person or like someone you can like physically touch but like kind of like a feeling and yeah maybe like a feeling like the anger against patriarchy or something like that yeah I think think that's how i would describe solver very cool thank you so much for your time and for your answers sure thank you so much bye thanks you
