So part of the ceremony will be our jury who will explain to you their thoughts and their reasons for the decision and this will be an interactive interactive ceremony with the jury on board. The festival jury this year has consisted of Afsaneh Salari, Mara Tamkovic and me, Björn Perborg. We feel fortunate to have been given the opportunity to watch all the 131 films that were selected for the festival. With films from 70 different countries a great diversity in expressions, themes and technique was offered. There were many strong films this year. Many films were considered award-worthy and the choice of a winner was not always easy. Hello everyone, my name is Afsaneh Salahri. I'm an Iranian director and producer based between Paris and Tehran. This year I was given the privilege to be one of the jury members of Linn's International Short Film Festival. I really enjoyed watching very diverse and thought-provoking film with very powerful cinematic languages. And I think the selection of this year's edition of Linz International Short Film Festival included that very unique characteristic of short film as a very independent medium which enjoys a certain sense of liberty and freedom when it comes to artistic expression and of course critical thinking. I really enjoyed watching the films with very high artistic qualities. I got very moved by their qualities. I laughed, I cried and I somehow received a certain sense of knowledge about the state of short film industry all around the world. So I would like to thank Lin's International Film Festival organizers for this opportunity. Hi, my name is Mara Tamkovic. I'm a director and screenwriter. I'm Belarusian and I'm based in Poland and I have been given the honor to be a member of Jury this year at the Linz International Short Film Festival. Thank you for that because it gave me a chance in this difficult and very lonely time to feel connected to all of you through your beautiful work. A lot of films this year touched very important subjects like immigration and feeling of home, abuse and the way we deal with it, the way we overcome it and of course love and the lack of it as the main source of human tragedy. A lot of your films featured very young men, main characters trying to survive in the world the adults have created for them and that gave me the feeling that I could really hear the voice of generation watching your films. Thank you for that. Here are the decisions of the jury for 2020. So let's get started with the category sound design. The nominations are Cain Rodriguez for Amber, N.CCA Maliki for each other, Yuka Andersson for I'm Listening, Vaseline Sografov for Nina, Nathan Vanhalla for Skin, and Siegfried Friedrich for TX Reverse. Let's hear what the jury said and find out who the winner is. Best sound design For the masterful use of sound as a storytelling device in a pitch-perfect genre film without dialogue. Playfully and with much love, the orchestration of sounds carves the emotional landscape of the protagonist, transcends the inner and outer worlds of the characters and ultimately plays the audience like an organ. The award for best sound design goes to… Cain Rodriguez for the film Amber. The winner is Cain Rodriguez for the film Amber. The award has been sponsored by Ambient. Congratulations, Cain Rodriguez! I'd really like to thank the Linzen Plastikfilm Festival for this award and recognizing our shop from Amber. It was quite a challenging experience working on the sound design of this film as the movie entirely has no dialogue but me working as a location sound recordist managed to get crisp sound on set with the addition of really good performances from the actors which reduced the load on in post enough to get much foley and do much polishing. But overall, it was a really good experience. And I'd really like to thank you once again for giving me this award. And I'd like to wish all the other participants all the best. Thank you and stay safe. Let's continue with the category edit. We have had the nominations as follows. Desislava Lazarova for the short film Roses in the Night, Yuval Orr for Skin, and Reinhold Bittner for Time or Designs. Best Editing Award. For executing montage as a strong formal tool that creates both visual and key dramatic transitions throughout the development of the narrative, the Best Editing goes to Desislava Lazarova for Roses in the Night, a film by Pencho Kuncev from Bulgaria. The winner is Desislava Lazarova. Congratulations for the film Roses in the Night. The award has been sponsored by Silverstack. Congratulations. Kepala Let's continue and check out the category acting. We have had the following nominations. Aiden Ljof for Adam, Yasal Xochayi for Don't Tell Anyone, Tatjana Xochic for Ficus, Plamena Stevanova for Nina and the set of actors mentioned before in the film Skin. The jury will tell us more about the decision in a minute. Best acting. For the stunning performance of a complex and difficult character trapped in cycles of abuse and violence, the best acting goes to Plamena Stefanova in the film Nina, directed by Hristo Simenov from Bulgaria. Plamena masterfully embodies the multi-layered character of Nina through minimalistic and yet sublime acting techniques. Congratulations! Plamena Stevanova for Nina. Congratulations Plamena and the award has been sponsored by Close Film. The The In the category Cinematography, the nominations were Vova Ivanov, Sammy Armand, Jonathan Gough Giddey, Albert Carr and Vito Francione. For elegance and minimalism, which create a very tasteful and distinguished image that not just tells the story but creates it. Best Cinematography goes to Albert Carr from Austria for The Opposite of Eternity. Congratulations. The winner is Albert Carr for The Opposite of Eternity. Congratulations Albert Carr. The award has been sponsored by Dido Light. Hello, this is Albert, the cinematographer of The Opposite of Eternity, directed by Joshua. I want to say thank you, thank you, thank you for receiving the prize for best cinematography for our short film. I especially want to thank the director, Joshua, who is a really visual thinking director. And we had a wonderful preparation time and a wonderful shoot, which was quite harmonic and actually calm, which is really special. We tried to avoid the ordinary stress on set because times are stressful anyways. And I also want to thank the whole crew. Every department did a fantastic job. We had to create this impossible spy mirror for a certain effect, which was a huge task. We had to find a perfect location because I mainly worked with natural light, almost only with some light reflected. And also the director, I want to thank him, Joshua, for trusting me. He was actually meeting me on the preparation of another shoot that I did before, another short film. And so during the prep of another film, he saw how I prepare this film and he asked me kind of in the doorway if I want to shoot something with him and he immediately presented the story in a really vivid and visual way and was asking already a lot of visual questions so that's what I actually enjoyed and I also want to thank, of course, the camera and lighting crew, who did a fantastic job and helped me out, and assisted me and went through all of it with me. And I also want to thank the whole crew, because I think that's what filmmaking is about it's about that we all work together on one thing so catering is really important costume I mean what is an image without proper costume and without props so thank you thank you this price also goes to you, I think. And I also want to say that it's especially an honour for me to receive the prize for this film, because it's not that easy to think of adequate imagery nowadays, since we are constantly flooded with images on our tablets, smartphones, on our distance learning systems and everything is moving so fast and everything is quite stressful actually. So that you honor the film with best cinematography that is going against this, that is going slowing down, that is calming down, that is in a playful way telling a story that is quite emotional and quite serious, but again in a playful way. That's why I'm really happy that you picked this film. That means a lot to me. And I say thank you. In the category Screenwriting, we have had the nominations Dekel Berenson for Anna, Katja Korhonen for I Am Listening, Christo Simeonov for Nina, Guy Native and Sharon Maimon for Skin, and Georgi Unkovsky for Sticker. Let's listen to the jury. For a story that masterfully combines thrill attention and powerful message, where every detail matters and the punishment is the very essence of the crime. The best script goes to Guy Natif and Sharon Maimon for Skin from USA. Congratulations. Guy Natif and Sharon Maimon for Skin. Congratulations. And the award has been sponsored by Close Film. Snakes have many predators. You ready? That's why they have camouflage. How do I know which ones are dangerous and which ones aren't? Snakes have colorful bodies. Were you fucking with my kid? You were looking at the toy. And they use that to warn predators that they're venomous. Snakes have colorful bodies. Were you fucking with my kid? You were looking at the toy. And they use that to warn predators that they're venomous. Careful with that, William. He's a fucking pro. Kind of feels like if I was identifying a poisonous snake, I really want to look for the color. The brighter the color, the more venomous. So once they're striking, you want to move out of the way. I need you to go hide under my bed. If you don't, if it's venomous, then you're dead meat. It's fascinating, isn't it? This is the next generation. Troy, Francis, Paul. Oh. In the category Directing, the nominations were Saulius Baradinskas for Golden Minutes, Katja Korhonen for I Am Listening, Christo Simeonov for Nina, Guy native for skin. The jury had a tough decision to make. Let's listen to what they say. For an original and masterfully executed way of showing what is actually absent, the best director goes to Katja Kornhonen for I'm Listening from Finland. Congratulations. The winner is Katja Korhonen for I'm Listening. Congratulations. And the award has been sponsored by Gecko Cam. Olen itse asiassa ollut Austriassa jo aiemmin ja rakastin sitä. and I guess it's the best thing a director could ask for. I've actually been to Austria before and I loved it and I would have loved to visit Linz if times were different. Instead I'm now enjoying the festival at home which is great too. But thank you so much for this. Danke schön and take care. We have a special mention in the category Best Directing. For pulling through a hyper-condensed real-time drama observed by a magically hovering camera. In this complex mise-en-scene, all the components come together to support the story. Production design, cast, acting, sound and cinematography. Special mention for best directing goes to Saulius Baradinskas for the film Golden Golden minutes. ТРЕВОЖНАЯ МУЗЫКА СИГНАЛ СМС There was a special mention by the jury to Saulius Baradinskas for golden minutes. In the category Animation, Alexander Kratza for Apfelmoos, Sarah Tabizade for Each Other, Ami Lindholm for Mother and Milk, Reinhold Biedner for Time O' the Signs, and Pencho Punchev for Roses in the Night. For forming a melancholic and yet intelligent critique through the use of familiar icons and playful quotes from different user experience interfaces. And for using recognition and humour as its powerful weapons of choice. The award for best animation goes to… Time of the Signs by Reinhold Biedner The winner is Reinhold Biedner for Time of the Signs. Congratulations Reinhold Biedner. The award has been sponsored by Close Film. Hello, Linz International Short Film Festival. Maybe some words about 2020. I received my first festival invitation for my film Time of the Signs this January. And then I thought, oh great, in March I'm going to Lisbon. And suddenly March was here and everything was of course quite different. The festival was cancelled, my trip of course was cancelled, other festivals were cancelled and sooner or later it looked quite promising that festivals started online editions of their festivals and yeah I'm totally happy that you did so as well because this is of course so much better than a cancellation from a filmmakers perspective and yeah thanks for your efforts congratulations you know for example your opening felt like a real opening your motion design looks fantastic your films are great so yeah thanks a lot for all this and nevertheless hopefully see you next year in real bye Bye! For describing one of the most poeticized experiences in the human life in a very true, prosaic but charming manner. For keeping the sense of humor while doing that and for making all the mothers and hopefully fathers smile. The special mention in animation goes to Emi Lindholm from Finland for Mother and Milk. Congratulations! Hi everyone at the festival and greetings from Finland! I'm so happy to hear that Mother and Milk won the special mention. It's super nice and it's nice that the thoughts and feelings On kiva, että ajatukset ja tunteet, joita teen elokuvan kanssa, ovat sopivissa festivalissa. Elokuvan kanssa halusin näyttää todellisia tunteita ja tunteita, mitä on koko elokuva, to become a mother and a parent. Sometimes it's really nice, but sometimes you cry and it's horrible and there is just too much milk and you're too tired. So sometimes it's very hard and I wanted to say that all the feelings of parenting, they're okay. And in the future I want to continue to make films for parents as well, so you might hear from me in the future again. And just a side note, that the baby who inspired me to make this film is now nine years old and is being my cinematographer in this video. I have to say hello. Hello. Hello and bye bye. I love you. A special mention by the jury for Amy Lindholm in the film Mother and Milk. In the category Documentary, Martina Mestrovich and Tanja Vujasinovic for A Cat is Always Female, Daniele Bokor and Liana Berkovic for Fata Morgana, and Rati Citelazte for Prisoner of Society. Thank you so much for the award of Best Austrian Short. We are so happy for this award and I want to thank you for inviting us to this festival and for making it possible that the festival can happen even though we have these difficult times the lockdowns and everything and that we can still see films online is so beautiful i hope you have all enjoyed the festival so far i want to thank my team everyone who was involved in the making of this film this award is for you and i hope to see you soon involved in the making of this film. This award is for you and I hope to see you soon back in the reality again. Thank you. We have a special mention in the category Best Austrian Film for pushing technical and visual boundaries and creating something that no one has ever seen before. This film offers a highly physical viewing experience with a great soundtrack. Special mention for Best Austrian Film goes to TX Reverse by Martin Reinhardt und Virgil Widrich. Back in the 1990s I experimented with slit photography and sliced stacks of analog photographs. This is how I developed a new way to look at space and time. When we began the TX transform project we also wanted to manipulate time and space but in an entirely different way. But how does TX Transform actually work? This can best be explained by means of a flipbook, in which the phases of movement lie on top of each other as individual sheets of paper. Normally you browse through a flipbook along the time axis, but with TX Transform it is rotated by 90 degrees and cut into thin slices from the side. The fact that meaningful images can be seen on these spatial sections is surprising at first sight and depends very much on the type of source material. Twenty years ago when we started with early TX transformations, we were limited by the camera and computer power back then. So when this project came up again two years ago, thought what could we do with today's technology? This brought us to the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin and their invention the Omnicam 360. This is a camera which is able to capture space with ten cameras simultaneously in a resolution of 10,000 pixels. We imagined a kind of a model situation in which the screen of a cinema becomes the border between two different worlds. We chose the Babylon in Berlin as our location because it is a timeless cinema with a lot of history. And we shot our special choreography there with 135 actors. When you transform material that was filmed with a static camera, something strange happens. Everything that formerly stood still disappears completely. Only what has been moving can be seen. If you move the camera at a certain constant speed, the opposite is true. Anything that stays still is not transformed and looks completely normal. But all objects moving around start to fall apart. The result, I think, is a collision of reality and cinema that no one has ever seen before. We have in fact another special mention in the category Best Austrian Film. For addressing philosophical concerns about the existence through an irresistibly charming animation. A remarkably well-carved script, hilarious deadpan voice acting and pasty-like colourful imagery make this absurd little jewel glow. Special mention for best Austrian film goes to Apfelmus by Alexander Grazer. Wedel Hello, my name is Alexander Grazwa, I'm the director of the short film Apfelmus and I got the message that my film received a special mention at your festival and I'm really, really really really happy about these news and in these strange times like I am isolated with my animals in my in my cave and and these these news they make me and and my flamingo really happy and I would like to thank the jury for awarding my film. I hope you had a great festival and I hope we can see each other soon and all the best from Vienna. Congratulations, best Austrian film. All Austrian winners and all those who have been specially mentioned by the jury receive an abonnement from our press partners and press sponsors Ray, Kodik Film and Film EPD. Congratulations! to an end and yet as we all know after the festival is before the next festival and it's all about hanging in there together it's all about us being in a dialogue together connecting via the art the art connecting via the arts and celebrating our diversity through our intercultural exchange when it comes to filmmaking.
