Wir haben schon gehört, wir werden noch, wir haben, I'm not sure, did we agree to speak in English? We make sense, okay. Okay, yeah, I think we stay in English? We make sense. OK. OK. Yeah, I think we stay in English. So we agreed also to talk mainly about music and not about other things which might seem to be more important these days, especially for Americans maybe. But as there is no official result, so we don't have to talk about election. I think that we have to talk first about the main event of this evening, besides this little festival, is that we have a birthday to celebrate and it's true and it's quite a round one can we say it you mentioned it already in the brochure Ja. Oh, wir haben zu singen, everybody. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday, Leopold Knapp. Happy Birthday to you. Danke schön. Oh, ja. Oh. Mama mia. Mach. Oh, yeah. Oh. Mamma mia. You do it. He's the expert with this kind of bottles. Okay, but don't put it in my direction. Yeah. This is called agraff. Okay. So I think we should talk about This is called a graph. Okay, so I think we should talk about alcohol and not about music. That's important things of life, music and alcohol and then the... So thank you very much for this concert. I would like to start with you, Jake, especially as you are maybe the one less known in Austria. Definitely. Because Burkhard and Angelika are quite famous in the fields of contemporary, experimental, improvised music. So how did it come to this collaboration and what's your approach towards this kind of music? Well, it was very last minute. I found out on Tuesday, I think. Burkhard asked me on Tuesday. And so it's kind of crazy but it's really nice to be here and to play with such experienced musicians especially in the field of improvisation and it's something pretty thank you something pretty new to me actually I'm not so experienced in the in improvisation but in the last year and a half or so I've been getting more and more into it. And yeah, so it's really great to have a mentor like Burkhard and also to be able to play with these guys. And so I think that this kind of music is always hard to describe. When I announced you, I said it's kind of contemplation. And so where did you put the focus on this kind of music? Is it contemporary or is it just improvised music and it doesn't matter how we call it? Yeah, I think it doesn't matter so much. I think... I think it's... I think it doesn't matter so much. I think... I think... Sorry. Yeah, I think it's just improvised music and we just kind of play what we feel in the moment. I don't know. We didn't talk so much about it beforehand. We said we wanted to have a calm atmosphere, I think, because of the crazy times. I think we achieved that. Yeah, you really did. And to all three of you, is it difficult to play without an audience? I mean, I think for me, the thing is, I think it's kind of, it doesn't matter at this kind of music if there is an audience or not. Yeah, to be honest, you know, I played a lot of concerts in front of ten people, so for me it was very common to do it like now. For sure, it's amazing to play in a festival in Wales in front of four or six hundred people. But the atmosphere is really great here and the people are fantastic, supporting. And so we did a good job, I think. Talk about good job. I think you should blow the candles. Blow the candles. Sorry. candles. Blowjob. Sorry. No, I think it's very nice to play in front of a lot of people and in front of one person, in front of nobody, playing alone. It as well has to be always the same intensity and as well playing this new way of the streaming concerts. I, at the beginning, of course it's a bit unsexy because it's the solution of something which cannot be, but at the end I don't know I get very excited to think like people are listening and looking really from abroad or even from Mexico or where I come from or US, Salud. And yeah, so everything should be, should have a place and was very nice to play today here. So it's kind of a blind interaction with an unknown audience. Yeah, and that's very, it's a lot of voyeurs you don't see, no? It's very nice. It's because we don't know who exactly is watching us or hearing us, but we know that a lot of friends from Mexico or Germany or the States are joining us this evening, and this is a new experience for me or for us. So it's kind of amazing situation nevertheless. Salud! Cheers! Happy birthday! I also realized afterwards I announced you wrong because I said Chesterfield Red but this was the band which was supposed to play, it was the quartet with Christoph and Maria. Maybe we'll call it, we didn't choose, we were too short to choose the name, Chesterfield Red would have been with Martha and Christoph and I think it's kind of blue, no? Was it Chesterfield Blue more or less or blues is there any special meaning to the name chesterfield besides the cigarette uh you know yeah but yeah it was actually because we had the cigarettes and that's it i mean it was very banal but there is a very a very special church in england which the tower turned a wood tower, wooden tower, one of the only churches with a wooden tower, which grew, turning itself to, you know, it's not, it was straight, and with the weather and everything became like a bit strange, so that's as well very nice. It was in Chesterfield, no? It was in Chesterfield. It's in Chesterfield, yes. Okay. Why not, yeah. Tarek, you are living in Vienna now? Yeah, I moved there about two years ago. I started studying at the NWA, Contemporary Music. And yeah, it's been about two years. And have you got to know any other kind of local scene in Vienna from experimental? Yeah, so my first entrance into this entire scene I would say is at Celeste, the Monday session at Celeste. You can find me there most Mondays actually. But yeah, through that I've met so many people and including neither of you actually, but a lot of other people in the scene and it's great. And what I realized, you're playing mostly analog signals, there are very less digital signals. So did you choose it by heart or was it kind of an accident? Because this music I think is very commonly known in digital context. And I also think if you don't see the performance, you also might think it's kind of a solo laptop event, which we had in the 90s. Well, I mean, maybe... I don't think so. But I mean, I think in my case, the sound of the cassette, I'm playing basically with this cassette and it's very, very, very low-fi. I do it even sometimes a bit too exaggerated and a lot of cassettes are a bit destroyed or quite destroyed and the possibilities this is manual possibilities you have I mean sometimes I even hit the flute with the machine so this wouldn't you wouldn't do with them with the laptop but maybe the maybe you what you mean is like maybe there is a bit of electro acoustic aesthetic which is a bit narrative maybe and this maybe there is a bit of electroacoustic aesthetic, which is a bit narrative maybe, and this maybe comes a bit from computer work, maybe this aesthetic, yes. But not the sound aesthetic, not so much, I think. I would say a great, great philosopher, Katerin Ambrose, she mentioned that using these old materials, because the evolution of the technology is so quick, and to come back to these materials, to tape machines, and to do it yourself things you know it's kind of I don't know the English word for that it's a kind of trowel a bad and more a morning morning morning job because a lot of things that get lost in this very quick to a book about a capital system, and artists are coming back, and just think what happened in the 50s, what happened in the 60s with the machines, with the tape, with the cassettes, with the fantastic analog tape recorders. And I think this is also kind of And I think this is also kind of trying to get a knowledge gain of history and to reinterpret some artistic and technological developments but you're also like oh yeah and these are all field recordings you do yourself most of them no no i i have some found objects from flea markets and everything and some record some tapes i do myself as well while playing like just on on air or yeah but i have a sampler too which is very digital and then you have a some the real field recordings i have done yes yeah so i would say thank you so much for being at this festival uh it was amazing amazing performance thank you for taking part in this special festival, this special event. And have a great time. Stay healthy. And enjoy the cake! Thanks so much for the organizers, the team and Wolfgang Wasserbach. Applause, applause! Thank you.
