Sebastian Buerkner (born 1975 in Berlin, Germany) lives and works in London. He completed an MA at Chelsea College of Art & Design in 2002 and was awarded their Fellowship Residency 2003. Since 2004 Sebastian Buerkners art practice focuses on working in animation ranging from single films to multiple video installations. solo shows include Tramway, Glasgow; Whitechapel Project Space, London; Kunstverein Wiesbaden; The Showroom, London; and Sketch, London. His recent stereoscopic film won several awards including a nomination to the European Film Awards.

So soon after the most recent ‘3D revolution’ an apparent dwindling enthusiasm for stereoscopic film asks for a fresh look at its opportunities, limitations and strategies.
Has the promise of emersion or of an amplified emotive experience been delivered?
So far it seems, Hollywood is allowed to define and rule over the potency of the spatial dimension in film. Were unforeseen opportunities overlooked or are yet to be discovered?
Alongside examples of experimental or unusual 3D works, the talk will explore the impact of stereoscopic vision on strategies of narration, augmentation, empathy generation and cognitive behaviour in general.
Additionally it will focus, if stereoscopic animation has an advantage over camera shot 3D for generating an explorative, surprising and emotive experience.
