Şengal
for String Orchestra (2017) Uraufführung
I wrote this piece as tribute to the Yazidi genocide victims in Kurdistan region of Iraq. It is based on a true story that involves a 54-year-old Yazidi Shepherd named Amin Jendi who was captured by ISIS. Amin Jendi was herding his flock in northwest Iraq on an August morning last year when Islamic State (Isis) militants attacked. By the time the 54-year-old returned to his village in the Sinjar area at lunchtime, Isis had taken over, and he was detained by the militants (Hawramy, Fazel, 2015). I used the shepherd’s struggle and suffering as a metaphor for all the Yazidi people who have suffered the most atrocious act committed by horrible people.
