Die vielen abenteuerlichen Mythen und Geschichten der letzten Jahrhunderte wurden abgelöst von tagesaktuellen Nachrichten über ertrunkene Menschen, gekenterte Boote, zurückgewiesene Flüchtlinge – das Meer wurde zunehmend auch zu einem Begriff, der für die Teilung der Welt steht, ein Sinnbild für politische Ungerechtigkeit und Maßlosigkeit.
