War der weibliche Akt seit Jahrhunderten selbstverständliches Bildthema und beliebter Ausstellungsgegenstand, wurde der Männerakt zumeist in Museumsdepots verbannt.
Zunächst nur in mythologischer Verkleidung als Bildthema relevant, wird der männliche Selbstakt um 1900 zum öffentlichen Handlungs- und Experimentierfeld.
Die Dekonstruktion des hegemonialen Männlichkeitsmodells, alternative Männlichkeitskonzepte, der Blick des Begehrens auf den männlichen Körper sind ebenso Thema, wie Körperkult und Körperzerstörung.
