This presentation compares two contemporary means to manage digital detritus – the deletion of unwanted data and the disposal of electronic waste. Algorithms for selecting and automatically deleting irrelevant data will be compared with market based interventions for disposing of former electronic goods. In both cases demarcating wanted from unwanted, valued from unvalued and relevant from irrelevant stuff will sit centre stage. However, continual slippages and failures of demarcation prove troublesome to those organising interventions. Algorithms struggle to map distinctions between relevant and irrelevant data, with some pointless data deleted and some important data overwritten. Market based interventions fail to acknowledge the complexity of value in forms of waste, with competition between waste firms derailing efforts to responsibly dispose of electronic goods. The presentation will conclude with an assessment of what matters in forms of demarcation. -- Daniel's interests cover issues of governance, accountability and ethics in forms of science, technology and organisation. He draw on ideas from ethnomethodology, science and technology studies (in particular forms of radical and reflexive scepticism, constructivism, Actor-Network Theory and the recent STS turn to markets and other forms of organising). His research is ethnographic in orientation. In particular he is interested in the question of how entities (objects, values, relationships, processes and also people) become of the world. Across a number of research projects Daniel has ethnographically engaged with: security and surveillance, traffic management, waste, airports, biometrics, parking, signposts, malaria vaccines, Universities, algorithms and speeding drivers. Through these projects he has looked into ontology, notions of equivalence, parasitism, the mundane, market failures, problems and solutions, deleting, value and the utility of social science. Daniel is the Principal Investigator on the MISTS project (www.marketproblems.com). Daniel Neyland has recently published a book on Mundane Governance, co-authored with Steve Woolgar and available from Oxford University Press. http://www.gold.ac.uk/sociology/staff/neyland/ -- Video licence: servus.at, CC BY-SA Programm: http://www.radical-openness.org/programm/2016 http://www.radical-openness.org Share & Embed Embed this Video Link to this Video Add new comment Kommentar verfassen login or register to post comments. servus.at 137 Videos, 2 Members #Tags Hacktivism Openness Open Culture Daniel Neyland servus.at Festival Transkription More from Channel 01:05:54 Presentation | Art Meets Radical Openness 2018 AMRO18// Pablo DeSoto - From the Sputnik to the Stack: Radic servus.at since 7 years 2 months 00:40:31 Presentation | Art Meets Radical Openness 2018 AMRO18// Felipe Castelblanco - Cartographies of the Unseen servus.at since 7 years 2 months 01:27:17 Panel | Art Meets Radical Openness 2018 AMRO18// Dancing with Dragons - Waiwai (Hiuwai Chan), Vuk Ćo servus.at since 7 years 2 months 00:44:52 Presentation | Art Meets Radical Openness 2018 AMRO18// Sea-watch servus.at since 7 years 2 months 01:18:09 Panel | Art Meets Radical Openness 2018 AMRO18// Page of Swords: Escaping filter bubbles using magic servus.at since 7 years 2 months 00:52:55 Stereotypes by Design Research Lab 2017: Barbara Ondrisek - Stereotypes by Design servus.at since 6 years 9 months 01:05:58 Die Roboter kommen?
