Die in New York City basierte Gruppe Alex Skolnick Trio sind die Pioniere des „Shrazz“, wie Metal-Shredding-Jazz genannt wird. Shrazz kombiniert Bebop Jazz „Standards“ und original Kompositionen mit kräftigem Arena Rock. Im Falle von Skolnick im Stil von Wes Montgomery und Black Sabbath.

Alex hatte das große Privileg bei Joe Satriani lernen zu dürfen und wie auch Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett oder Charlie Hunter als einer der erfolgreichen Studenten des Gitarren-Gurus hervorzugehen. Als Gitarrist und Begründer der Metal-Trash Band "Testament" und der Metal-Klassik Band „Trans Siberian Orchestra“ wurde Skolnick international bekannt.

Kirk Hammet von Metallica sagte in einem Interview mit dem Guitar World Magazine über das Alex Skolnick Trio, “Love them. I love his work. What Alex is doing by putting heavy metal songs in a jazz context is completely refreshing. His take on "Detroit Rock City" blew me away; that song has never sounded better to me. And when you think about, the old jazz standards were the pop music of their time, so Alex has updated the notion of what a standard is, and it's opened up all the current music to interpretation.” (Pressetext)
